Growing Opportunities: Supporting Statewide Collaboratives

In a new initiative launched in 2013, VON partnered with key leaders in state-based quality improvement from the Neonatology Quality Improvement Collaborative in Massachusetts (NeoQIC), Michigan and the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network from New Hampshire (NNEPQIN), to support their work in developing coordinated statewide quality improvement efforts in a virtual “demonstration project”.  The states elected to adopt the VON NAS Toolkit and NAS Curriculum, which offers a ready-to-implement evidence-based structured curriculum. Interested states adapted and adopted these ready-to-use materials and methods as they strive to develop coordinated statewide quality improvement collaborative(s) focused on this important topic. The states participated in the VON Day Quality Audit and state leaders received state-wide progress reports. Additionally, some of the states collected supplemental data and measures to fuel their work.

NeoQIC, led by Munish Gupta MD,  and Alan Picarillo MD,  has successfully rallied 8 Level 3 and 33 level 1 and 2 centers in this important work.  NNEPQUIN has enrolled 6 centers and is working under a charter from the NH State Health Department on a broad-based goal directed initiative, led by William Edwards MD.  In Michigan, an effort led by Padmani Karna MD with support from their governor, has enrolled 11 tertiary and 10 Level 1 and 2 centers in this important initiative.

These states used the VON Core and Intensive Curriculum, to develop statewide goals, measures, advocacy efforts, and regional educational events. They are actively engaging both publicly and privately funded third-party payers, including Medicaid, as well as their state health departments.
