Quality Improvement Collaborative

Project Warm Welcome

We are leveraging the knowledge and efforts of all VON members at 1,200+ centers to address the topic of admission temperature in neonatal care.

50,000 infants are out of range every year.

We need all VON members worldwide working together to ensure all infants are admitted to the NICU in the normal temperature range of 36.5-37.5c. This has the potential to improve the lives and outcomes of 50,000 infants and their families each year.

Why Focus on Admission Temperature?

According to VON data, more than 50,000 infants are admitted outside the normal temperature range each year. That’s about 20% of the infant records collected by VON.

The effects of being too cold or too hot impact infants of all gestations and birth weights, inborn and outborn. This is a clear opportunity for improvement among all levels of care and geographic locations.

The complications are particular to each sub-population. The impact of being outside normothermic on admission for a very preterm infant is different than a term infant). Therefore, VON members will work together within the VON learning community on specific change ideas to address the areas of improvement most relevant to their own local setting.

Project Warm Welcome is a collaborative that will help all VON members improve together.
