Dr. Asrat Demtse, one of the first Ethiopian-trained neonatologists, spearheaded the implementation of this program. She has worked closely with VON in her fellowship training and professional development as a neonatal leader in the country, and this program is a crucial next step to build capacity for improving care for infants and families in Ethiopia. The country has a population of about 100 million people, yet has fewer than 500 pediatricians and fewer than 10 neonatologists. The 18 future leaders enrolled in this program fill an important gap vital to improving care and outcomes.
