VON-African Paediatric Fellow Program Scholarship
Following the experience of providing two exceptional neonatology fellows with tuition support in the APFP program, VON committed to co-sponsoring a sustainable scholarship with APFP, competitively selecting one fellow every two years. The VON-APFP fellow will receive additional training in quality improvement and research mentorship, and return to their home country as a neonatologist and national/regional leader in newborn care.
Current Fellow: Naa Djama Glover (Ghana)
Previous Fellows:
- Fitsum Belay (Ethiopia)
- Marcia Mangiza (Zimbabwe)
Neonatology Fellowship Programs
Ethiopia and Rwanda
VON partners with leadership colleagues at Addis Ababa University and St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the National University of Rwanda in Kigali to support the establishment of high-quality local neonatology fellowship training programs with a transitional model of decreasing international support as graduates contribute to the infrastructure of the programs. Multi-disciplinary VON volunteers actively engage as faculty, providing in-person and remote support and mentorship to the fellows and training programs.
Advanced Practice Neonatal Nursing Program
VON supports multi-disciplinary faculty for the advanced practice neonatal nursing program at Addis Ababa University, championed by Dr. Asrat Demtse. Similar to the Ethiopian neonatology fellowship program led by Dr. Asrat, this program has a transitional model of decreasing international support over time as graduates contribute to the infrastructure of the program. We are honored to continue supporting the role of advanced practice providers and educators in quality improvement and helping to develop future leaders in newborn care.
